The Debate – De-escalation zones in Syria (Video)

“’De-escalation’ was a carefully chosen word in order to reduce to the bare minimum the use of weapons.” UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura believes that if the setting up of de-escalation zones in Syria as agreed upon in Astana by Russia, Turkey & Iran, succeeds, it can help Geneva peace talks too. Ironically, foreign backed militants tabled a de-escalation zone proposal themselves, but walked out of this final signing, apparently over Iranian involvement & a threat to Syrian sovereignty. De-escalation zones will help end violence, the return of refugees, & delivery of relief supplies & medical aid, but details about how they will be enforced are still unclear. In this edition of the debate with me, Waqar Rizvi, we discuss de-escalation zones in Syria.
